From a Walkman to the Olympia Stage: The Georgina D’Abreo Story

Georgina D’Abreo never set out to become an athlete. For most of her early adult life, she would have laughed at anyone who suggested otherwise. Her story didn’t begin with a coach or a bodybuilding dream. It began with a walk. As part of a community health initiative in India, Georgina volunteered to take elderly neighbors on morning walks, moving alongside people decades older than her simply to give back. It was there, putting one foot in front of the other, that she first noticed her own body responding. After two C-section deliveries had left her carrying extra weight,

she found herself with a 26-inch waist for the first time in her life, and with the rainy season approaching, she feared losing that progress. A friend suggested a gym membership as insurance, and Georgina walked through those doors feeling completely lost among machines she couldn’t name. “I never considered myself an athlete. In fact, I thought I was the complete opposite,” she says. So she hired a personal trainer just to learn the basics, never imagining the decision would rewrite the entire trajectory of her life.

The Sanctuary Behind the Headphones

What she found inside that gym became far more than exercise. Outside its walls, life was carrying a weight of its own. Music itself was treated as something forbidden in her household, believed to be “tempting the devil.” Inside the gym, none of that reached her. She would remove her glasses so she wouldn’t have to acknowledge anyone around her, put on her Walkman, and disappear into her own world. “It was just me, the machines, and my music.

That was heaven,” she recalls. She trained with one purpose: to exhaust herself so completely that nothing remained to react to the stress waiting outside. Then something unexpected happened. Her trainer kept adding weight to the bar, and she kept lifting it with ease. “Strong began to feel so good,” she says. For the first time, she had discovered something she never knew she possessed.

Finding the Stage

That strength eventually carried her across an ocean. Georgina moved from India to Canada and kept training simply because she loved it, unaware that the fitness world even had a competitive stage. People at her gym kept asking the same question: “Do you compete?” She had no idea what they meant, until a friend took her to watch a show. She held a Master’s degree in Business Management and Accounting, yet she had already realized a desk job could never hold her the way movement and teaching did. At roughly thirty-six, she stepped on stage for the first time in the Fitness Star Model Search and placed third. Rather than feeling satisfied, she grew curious about what else she was capable of. That curiosity led her into the Ontario Physique Association, now the Canadian Physique Alliance.

“The lights, the music, the energy—it all felt like home. It felt like where I was meant to be,” she says. Her goal on stage was simple: “I wanted to put a smile on every judge’s face and a simple kinda happy feeling in their hearts when they looked at me.” Years of competition followed, culminating in 2017 when she earned her IFBB Pro card, one of the proudest moments of her life. Now she is chasing something bigger still: becoming the first Indian woman in history to compete on the Olympia stage. “I aspire to inspire women everywhere, especially Indian women, to understand that all things are possible,” she says. “You simply have to want it badly enough, be willing to put in the work, and have the courage to believe that the impossible can become possible.”

The Transformation No One Sees

For all the physical change her body has undergone across lean, stage-ready seasons and softer, growth-focused off-seasons, Georgina insists the deepest transformation was never physical at all. “My greatest transformation has been learning to love myself,” she says. She learned that self-worth cannot be tied to a number on the scale or how defined her abs are, and that the real challenge is accepting herself through every phase of the process.

Perhaps most surprising was becoming aware of the negative self-talk running quietly in the background of her own mind. “We speak to ourselves more than anyone else does, and the quality of those conversations shapes the quality of our lives,” she says. She has come to see self-love not as a destination but as a lifelong practice, one that must be renewed daily, in the strong moments and the struggling ones alike.

The Broken Arm and the Thirteen-Year-Old Teacher

Georgina’s resilience was tested most severely on December 25, 2013, not long after her move to Canada, when a fall on a patch of ice fractured her dominant right arm. The injury damaged her radial nerve, leaving her right hand essentially lifeless. She had no health coverage at the time, and the bills piled up quickly: fifteen hundred dollars for the first hospital visit, and another five hundred for every follow- up X-ray and bone reset. She had to relearn how to do everything with her left hand. Then came the moment that broke her. A neurologist told her she would likely live with a “dead arm” for the rest of her life.

Georgina collapsed near the hospital entrance, sobbing, and called her thirteen-year-old daughter. Her daughter sat her down and said something Georgina says she will never forget: “Maa, people have told you your whole life that you wouldn’t be able to do so many things, and you’ve proven every single one of them wrong. Why are you allowing this doctor to tell you what you can’t do?” “In that moment, the roles had reversed,” Georgina says. “My daughter became my teacher.” Nine months later, she stepped back onto a bodybuilding stage and won her first Overall Title in the Women’s Physique Division. “The real obstacle was never the injury,” she reflects. “It was deciding whether I would accept someone else’s limitations for my life.”

Teaching, Not Just Training

As an IFBB Pro and Mind-Body Transformation Coach, Georgina builds her entire philosophy around one idea: “Give a person a fish, and you feed them for a day. Teach them how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime.” She applies the same principle to nutrition, having moved away from rigid, one-size- fits-all meal plans in favor of an individualized approach. She often compares the body to a car, noting that different engines need different fuel to run well.

“Food should be viewed as fuel, not feared,” she says. Making food a friend, rather than an enemy, sits at the center of how she coaches long-term health. She also believes in leading by example, training consistently and prioritizing her own recovery so her clients understand that health is less about finding more time and more about making intentional choices.

Measuring Success Beyond the Trophy

Georgina counts her IFBB Pro card and her Top 5 finishes on the professional stage among her proudest achievements. But she says her greater success lives in coaching. Early on, people told her she would never succeed as a coach because she was “too muscular.” She chose not to believe them.

Today, many of her clients have stayed with her for years, “not because they need me, but because we’ve become family.” “True success is measured not only by achievements on stage but by the lives you inspire and the relationships you build along the way,” she says.

What Comes Next

Georgina’s message to anyone beginning a fitness journey, especially women, is simple: “It’s never too late, you’re never too old, and nothing is impossible. Failure only becomes final when you stop working toward your goals.”

She is actively pursuing her Olympia dream while completing her biography, hoping it inspires others to turn their own challenges into possibilities. Beyond competition, she envisions a future as an inspirational and motivational speaker. “My mission is simple,” she says, “to show people that ordinary individuals are capable of achieving extraordinary things.”
